found a bunch of miscellaneous extra snippets of writing that either were part of other fics and didn't work, or were going to be fics but i lost the juice/interest... figured i might as well post....!

for this first one, back in 2021 at the height of my arakao brain damage, many dear friends indulged my whims even though they rlly didn't have to and here is a series that was written based on me going "PLEASEEEEE WRITE ABOUT ARAKAO" when asked for help on a creative writing projectafhjkfhjak which inspired me write my own arakao where arashi is a mermaid just to see how i could spin it.. however merperson aus aren't actually particularly interesting to me like i don't think interspecies romances are really all that honestly (not you the shape of water 2017 never you) so i lost interest after penning a couple of scenes. i think the plot was going to be the typical sort of fisherman catches beautiful mermaid in net, nurses her to health, they bond, eventual romance etc etc. maybe there was going to be some implied transgenderism with kaoru also... humanity's binary ideations of gender from the perspective of someone who really has no idea about all that > cracking eggs? mostly i think i was fighting for my life thinking about how the fuck merfolk would function physiologically and it was killing me like i was really googling the fuck out of cetacean anatomy like HELPPPPP HELPPPPPP. all this to say that the last edit was in march of 2022 so i can't speak for quality but i figure i may as well post it here for the memories

In the dark, it’s hard to see anything more than a silhouette, but this one is unmistakable. Modern merfolk aren’t supposed to be this close to shore, and yet here one is, in his little boat. Shoulders of a human and the smooth, long tail of some sort of porpoise or shark.

“What are you doing out here in the shallows?” Kaoru mutters, more to himself than to it. His mother told him that they wouldn’t speak the way people do, their language much closer to the songs of whales or the clicking system of dolphins than to the phonetics that humans wound up developing. He doesn’t think there was any proof to back that statement up, but he trusts his dead mother’s words more than he can even trust himself. He wishes she were here.

As expected, the mermaid only makes a ticking noise in response, but it doesn’t seem to be all that agitated. Instead, he thinks it might only be trying to disentangle itself from his net. He slowly moves to help, careful not to startle it, the way he would move while fishing with a rod. “There we go,” he says, trying to avoid contact, but its hands bump against his. Cool and a bit rough. They both flinch, and the mermaid softly clicks. “Sorry.” It feels like he’s talking to himself, but that’s usually how it is when he’s on the water, and his mom liked to say that it was a good habit of his, even though his father always told him it was bad form. His father also told him that mermaids weren’t real, so he pushes his father’s advice all the way to the back of his mind.

[it would have been a slice of life type of thing where kaoru goes about his daily business while also nursing arashi back to health and slowly getting to know each other. very sfw tsow tbh]

Arashi presses her hand up against his throat, palm cupping his Adam’s apple. She has this look in her violet eyes, almost electric, that same look from last night. Speak, it says, even though she doesn’t make a single sound.

“You’re beautiful,” Kaoru says softly, not sure if she understands it, or if he even wants her to.

Arashi furrows her eyebrows together in a frown, and he takes that as evidence of ignorance. He doesn’t know if he likes that or not. Satisfied with his speech, her hand falls to his chest, and she tugs on his dog tag necklace quizzically.

“My name,” he says with a laugh, flipping it over so she can see the imprints in the metal. “See? Kaoru. Me.” He points to himself, wondering how much she comprehends. Obviously, she’s just as intelligent as a human, but the concept of personhood as attached to some written symbols is something so abstract and yet taken for granted, and he’s not sure if merfolk have the same ideas. Me. You.

Arashi pulls on his necklace again, a little more forcefully now. She’s smiling or at least trying to, lips stretched away from her sharp teeth in something that looks more threatening than friendly, but the effort strikes him somewhere in the chest. He thinks she wants him to lean closer, so he does.

She straightens up, brings a hand against her own throat. “You’re — beautiful,” she says, haltingly, but the words are clear. She has a slight rasp from lack of use, but that doesn’t dampen the sharp, bright quality to her tone. It reminds him of sea glass. Arashi points her finger into his sternum, meeting his eyes with a ferocity that surprises him. “Kaoru.”

the next is portions from snnrnsfw that i had to cut bc i wasn't rlly feeling them... sometimes u have to just get words on a page to play with them a little and then you're like woah this is kinda not delicious at all. another problem was that it was so much expository intro.. which is a problem that made it into the actual fic anyway but this one specifically had so much leo that it verged on sex comedy iznrlo throupleisms which WOULD be nice but that i did not have the patience to mold into something decent. so i gave up... :smoking: but here's the bits and pieces

That does make this a bit easier. “I thought you said it’s not a love hotel. These freaks put that stuff in there?”

“It wasn’t them,” Arashi says, mildly again. Izumi is about to demand where the hell it came from, but his mind catches up with his mouth just in time. How long has she been planning this? The same amount of time, Izumi reckons, that he’s been having trouble sleeping.
Love hotels. after that night, izumi has always imagined if they ever did it together it would be in one of their rooms, a silly, impractical fantasy. the shared rooms of starmony dorms don’t make it easy to plot anything even if both of them were up to it. the next best scenario is one where Arashi visits them in Italy, leo conveniently running an errand on his own (there is no way to fantasize anything more realistic), and tells Izumi to speak Italian to her and it escalates from there. But a love hotel is at the very bottom of the hypothetical list of locations where sena izumi would have sex with anyone, and especially not arashi.

Izumi is doing nothing when he gets Arashi’s call. He considers letting it go to voicemail but leo yells at him from the other side of the room
at any rate arashi has enough time on her hands to relentlessly initiate as many phone calls as necessary till the other party picks up, whether that be three or thirty, so it’s not a battle Izumi can win unless he sets his phone on Do No Disturb. he is opposed to this on principle due to his occupation, so he picks up. it’s not like he was doing anything today, anyway — he and leo are back in japan, but it’s not really on business so much as it’s on vacation

ruka in high school and leo doing something with her
this is probably why arashi calls instead of texts

“What do you want,” he says in the same instant Arashi sings, “Izumi-chan. ”

i sent you the location already. just don’t be late, okay?
what are you talking about
it’s a secret!
naru-kun…

Leo, lounging on the couch, flipping through

Leo laughs. “You of all people know better than to leave a princess hanging, Sena!”

“Not a princess, it’s only Naru-kun,” Izumi retorts.

“Right, right. Naru’s the queen, no? Even worse!” Leo leans forward with a grin. “Like the Queen of Hearts! Off with your head ~ ☆”

“Stuuupid. Am I supposed to be Alice?”

“Hmm. I dunno. Wait, don’t change the subject. She’ll be pissed if you don’t get there fast.”

“Naru!”

“Leo-kun!”

maybe you would like to join us…?
No can do! i’m meeting ruka-tan at a café!
you’re not driving her?
noooo, she’s a big girl now… in uni and everything
ah, well, have fun. it’s terrible manners to let a cute girl wait.
that’s what i told sena on the way here!

Izumi is so used to affecting nonchalance and Arashi dances around any difficult subject with a smile on her face.
They will always be the same as they’ve always been to each other, and Izumi knows better than to rouse sleeping dogs. Is it too selfish to wonder about anything else, when he had been the one to say they wouldn’t change?
He sometimes wonders if anyone in Knights even knows how to breach difficult subjects, or if all of them just hope that the weird telepathic bond they’ve formed can do the work in their stead.

in other news pacrim arakao is on its final leg i think.... definitely will have it out within the year. maybe even the first half of the year...!!
